The goal isn’t to be perfect - that’s simply impossible. But we firmly believe that every conscious decision (and purchase) counts. Together we can make a difference. Or, as zero waste expert Anne Marie Bonneau puts it: “We don’t need a handful of people doing it perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”
Why we want to do things differently, is because consumerism clearly is in desperate need of change. Especially in the fashion and beauty industry.
The current fashion system involves a yearly production of more than 100 billion garments. With compressed production cycles and up-to-the-minute designs, the clothing industry enables shoppers not only to expand their wardrobes, but also to refresh them quickly. This creates a fast fashion culture, with clothes being worn an average of just seven times before they’re thrown away. Besides the fact that clothing production is an enormous drain on natural resources, it is also hugely polluting.
Similar to the above, the beauty industry produces more than 120 billion units of packaging annually, of which 95% of it is thrown out after just one use, and only 14% of plastic makes it to a recycling center. Speaking of which, only 9% of all plastic waste ever produced has been recycled; about 12% was incinerated and all the rest - 79% - ended up in landfills, dumps, or the natural environment. Considering that cosmetic packaging can take hundreds of years to break down, the ecological, economic and eco-toxicological effects of this are all long-term.
And what about human rights? Big brands have talked for decades about their commitment to workers’ rights, but keep failing to fix labour exploitation. Employees are suffering from intense work for low wages. Factories frequently overwork them in order to gain profit quickly. On top of this, many of the 170 million child labourers worldwide work within the fashion supply chain to satisfy the demand of consumers in Europe, the US, and beyond.
We know we can do better, and we know you want to do better. But especially for us customers it can be incredibly hard to navigate the complex web of sustainability. Even if you try to shop responsibly. Because where do you start and who can you trust? That is why we’re here to help.
We are on a mission to transform the way we shop. Therefore we are building a community committed to creating a sustainable and ethical future, and we invite you to become a part of it. We can only make a positive impact if we do this together!
Creating a movement
Everyone of us can make a positive impact, even if it’s the slightest one. Voting with our wallet is one of the most powerful things we can do as customers. Remember: little things make big things happen! We invite you to make waves together while shopping for the things you love.
