For this edit, we loved sitting down with influencer and mum of twins and triplets (!), Manon Proper (@manonproper on Instagram). We asked her why and how she manages to live a more sustainable life with 5 kids. She also shared her favourite brands and pieces from the SCOON collection. Enjoy, this is a good one !
The older I get, the more I try to live a more conscious and sustainable life. I want my children to be able to enjoy all the beautiful things nature has to offer, just like I did in my younger years. Since I moved to a country (Hungary) where sustainability is generally not so high on people’s agenda, the challenge is often even greater. However, I do what I can and I hope I’m giving the right example to my children.
Living more sustainably means first and foremost that I try to make better choices as a consumer. When I buy food, I buy organic and preferably from local farmers. I cook with the produce that I can find in the small local shops and markets and I adjust my recipes to fit in seasonal products. Also, I try to avoid food and produce that has a heavy environmental footprint or is otherwise causing a burden on nature. I wouldn’t agree with those people who argue that cooking more sustainably is hard. I find it pretty easy, to be honest. One of the key things is to try and eat produce that sits lower on the food chain: eat more fruits, vegetables, grains and less red meat and processed food. Also, by adding a bit more creativity into my cooking, I have been able to reduce food waste.
Another aspect that I try to do is to buy clothes from brands that care. I prefer to buy smaller in quantity, but higher in quality. At the end of the day, it pays off to skip the many fast-fashion items, but opt for fewer high-quality products that will last a lifetime. In my wardrobe, you will find many high-quality basics that I bought years ago. Typically, I prefer to buy timeless pieces made of natural fibres such as organic cotton, linen or sustainable merino wool.
Like everybody else, I also enjoy following the latest fashion trends on Instagram, but at the same time, it makes me sad that most of the items sold today, end up in landfills within a very short cycle. Obviously, with five young children in the house, it is impossible to buy only the most expensive brands. It is encouraging, therefore, that some fast-fashion companies are paying more attention to conscious clothing, even for the little ones.
I must admit that making the right choices in fashion and skincare isn’t easy! It takes time to find the brands that meet my needs and care about the environment at the same time. This is why I love the SCOON webshop! Whenever I am in the shop, I simply can’t stop putting items in my shopping basket. I know that the Scoon team puts huge effort in curating the best brands and products, and it shows!
SCOON has asked me to make a top-5 of my favourite products in their webshop. It became a top-10. I simply couldn’t choose.
The Riley Studio Recycled Cashmere Sweater in the colour Cloud. This sweater has been on my wish list for a very long time. This super soft and cosy sweater has everything I would be looking for in a sweater! Let’s start with the fabric: Cashmere. What’s not to love about cashmere? The fabric makes this sweater the ideal item for chilly summer nights, but also a lovely layer for those cold winter days. The colour is spot on. And last but not least, the technology that has been used to make this sweater is innovative and leaves a very low carbon footprint. Win-win-win!
Adidas by Stella Mccartney Essential Legging. The past few months my workout routine hasn’t been a proud worthy one. Being at home with all the kids due to the Corona crisis is my excuse ;) However, the new sportswear by Stella Mccartney might be just what I need to get back on track. I love the design of this legging. It is simple yet full of technical details that make it perfect for a comfortable workout. Let’s see if this will do the trick for me. If not, I would easily wear this on any morning school run, which is probably the best workout anyway ;)
So, while I’m at it, a good workout legging should go with a good workout sweatshirt, don’t you agree? At least I like to think so. The Adidas by Stella Mccartney Essential Sweatshirt seems like the ultimate item to use during or after a workout, but also, a comfy sweater to wear on a lazy Sunday (or Saturday if you prefer).
The Hoxton Clutch by Been London is a must-have accessory for summer nights out. When I go out, I leave everything at home except for a credit card, some cash, a lipstick and a phone. This light coloured clutch will fit those items and will look great with every summer outfit. Plus: the entire clutch is made from recycled materials!
Ilia Lip Crayon, colour: Dress you up warm mauve. I love wearing lipstick when I go out. However, sometimes I prefer a more natural and clean look. To me the best way to get that natural look is by using a tinted lip crayon on the contour of my lips, followed by a very good moisturizing lip balm to smooth the crayon out. This is probably not the way to go according to make-up artists, but it does the trick for me!
Ilia Lip Conditioner. Everybody needs a good lip conditioner! As far as I know, dry lips have never made it in fashion.
Madara Anti Oxidant Sunscreen Body SPF 30. An easy to apply, translucent, mineral-based sunscreen with high protection is very hard to find. Trust me, I did my research! We all know we need to protect our skin against sun rays, and most of us also know that using sunscreen based on chemical filters will harm the environment. (In case you didn’t know this, please read about it!) However, most mineral-based sunscreens are not so easy to apply and some of them leave this layer of white cast. With Madara, you can protect your skin, while not harming the environment AND you won’t look like a ghost when you’re taking a dip in the ocean.
The Ohm Collection Deodorant Cream Lavender cream based deodorant without aluminium. I want to smell and feel fresh for the entire day. However, most deodorants contain harmful ingredients to do the trick. Not this one! It is based on natural ingredients and it is entirely vegan. Also, the smell is not overwhelming but it has a light lavender scent. Sounds perfect to me.
Grown Alchemist Polishing Facial Exfoliant. I love this brand. All the Alchemist products smell great and do what they claim to do. This facial polish seems like the ideal solution to get that ultimate glow. It is a gentle exfoliator for everyday use, just what I need.
The Madara Hyaluronic Anti-Pollution CC. I wear make-up almost every day. I just feel rather ‘naked’ not wearing anything on my face. However, I don’t like to wear several layers on my face during the daytime, such as moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation, and powder. This is why I always choose to put a good quality CC cream on top of my regular moisturizer in the morning. A CC cream helps to even your skin tone and to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. The Madara Hyaluronic Anti-Pollution CC cream offers a broad spectrum of sun protection. An excellent product for a day in the city.
