WHAT IS ORGANIC COTTON AND WHY CARE? WHAT IS ORGANIC COTTON AND WHY CARE?

From fruit to skincare to bedding to clothing, you now see organic products in almost every market. The term ‘organic’ itself has become a trademark for high quality and ecologically conscious production and many fashion brands are now incorporating organic cotton into their manufacturing processes. But why is there such a buzz around organic cotton and why should you care?

Read on to find out reasons why to choose organic cotton over conventional cotton when shopping a white tee for example:

1. Reduction of environmental footprint. Organic cotton seeds have not been genetically modified (non-GMO) and are grown without the use of any chemicals, pesticides, fertilisers or other artificial agricultural substances. This means it won’t damage the soil and has less impact on the air. Conventional cotton uses about 16% of the world’s insecticides and 7% of pesticides.

2. Promotion of safe work environment for farmers: Growing organic cotton keeps farmers and their families safer than conventional cotton. They are not exposed to toxic chemicals in the field or through their food and water supply.

3. Pay a fair price: When you buy organic cotton, you are investing in water conservation, cleaner air, better soil and farmer livelihoods.

So what are the actual stats then and what is your impact? When you buy a t-shirt choosing organic cotton over ordinary cotton you save about: 436 litres of water, driving an average car for 1km, and keeping a 60w lightbulb on for an hour. Maybe this doesn’t sound that much, but add up the numbers for your whole wardrobe, and then for all of your friends, and so on.

Luckily there are many beautiful modern brands out there nowadays that consciously choose high quality organic cotton for their products. These are the SCOON team’s favourite shirts.
