International Women’s Day is an annual event that celebrates all the amazing things women have achieved. It originated over 100 years ago in 1910, when International Women’s Day was first celebrated, with the aim to have equality for men and women across the world, which we are still fighting for today.
It’s extremely important to celebrate International Women’s Day to honour and appreciate the different achievements that women have accomplished around the world, including successes in society, economy, politics and culture. It is a way to show how women have and continue to influence the world.
As a way of contributing to uplifting women this International Women's Day, we thought we would take a moment to share some of the amazing and innovative women owned businesses on SCOON and give a little bit of insight into the people behind the brands.
And Pause: Founder Renee is the queen of DIY and cherry picks the best of vintage. Renee washes and photographs the items to create wearable and unique pieces that provoke thought and creativity.
Ask Scandinavia: Helsinki based, women founded company Ask Scandinavia creates modern and ethically made bags, designed to last the change of time. The idea of ASK was born when two women became mothers and could not find a sophisticated changing bag on the market, so they made their own.
Boobs’Essential: The business was developed in memory of founder Zoe’s mother who was diagnosed with type 4 breast cancer. Zoe’s mother’s illness made her realise how important it was to check your breasts regularly to avoid late detection of any abnormalities. This is a 100% natural, high quality and ethically sourced oil to nurture your breasts and empower self-care.
J Label: Janneke and Judith, a former jurist and lawyer, enthusiastically take justice to the next level. J Label was founded in 2018, the brand values ethical production, organic and sustainable materials, and fair working conditions in the supply chain.
Kure Bazaar: Kure Bazaar founder Kartika has managed to create one in the most vibrant nail polish ranges and with 85% natural-based ingredients.
Rhea: Founded by women for women, Rhea is a sustainable luxury knitwear brand committed to 100% transparency.
The Knotty Ones: Based between Brooklyn, New York, and Vilnius, Lithuania, the three young female founders of The Knotty Ones are in pursuit of changing the industry one knit at a time.
Lastly, we would like to highlight the fact that SCOON is a women owned business, founded by Marloes and Guusje. Two women who never let distance or logistics get in the way of a good business idea. Within 10 minutes of brainstorming, the idea became obvious, but more than that - a necessity: why was there nowhere contemporary to shop clean beauty products and sustainable fashion sourced from all corners of the world? Confident that their careers had equipped them with skills necessary to get their vision off the ground they wasted no time in quitting their corporate careers to launch their passion project.
As well as celebrating brilliant women, it's also used as a day to highlight and raise awareness about issues that women still face. It’s also a time to remember those who continue to go unheard and are prevented from reaching their full potential, as basic rights like health and education are still not recognised for some women around the world.
We want to thank you for reading our piece, and we hope you can join us in wishing every woman a Happy International Women's Day this year.
