Unfair wages
The global garment industry has doubled over the past decade and is powered by an estimated 60 million workers. Unfortunately, many of the people working within the garment industry face inhumane working conditions and do not earn a fair living wage due to the lack of human rights in countries where most of the western market’s garments are produced. This deprivation stands in strong contrast to the huge profits reported annually by the global fashion brands who are exploiting garment workers in an act of modern day slavery.
Let's break it down
When breaking down the costs of a garment, research shows that wages spent on workers only equate to around 0.6% of the total costs of a garment. On average, wages are 2-5 times lower than what is needed to be able to afford the bare minimum e.g food, housing, healthcare and education. In addition, workers often face unsafe, cramped and hazardous conditions and are forced to work 14-16 hours a day 7 days a week to meet tight deadlines set by fast fashion brands.
